President Xi Jinping expressed concern about Hong Kong's Covid-19 situation as he endorsed the work of Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor in her first online duty visit to state leaders.
Xi also praised her for “having taken a firm stand” in national security issues and her efforts in fighting the pandemic.
Lam and Macau Chief Executive Ho Iat-seng yesterday delivered their duty report to Xi and Premier Li Keqiang via video conference replacing their annual visit to Beijing that has been delayed from last month.
During the meeting, Xi extended his “sincere condolences” to all Hongkongers after they have been hugely impacted by the coronavirus outbreak, as he also expressed his worries regarding the fourth wave of Covid-19 outbreak in the SAR.
“I am concerned and worried regarding the fourth wave of outbreak in Hong Kong recently which has endangered citizens’ life and health, and caused a lot of inconvenience in citizens’ daily and working life,” he said.
Xi also praised Lam for stopping the riots in Hong Kong and pushing the city back on track, as he said “the Central Government fully recognizes your performance as well as the SAR government discharging its duties responsibly.”
In response, Lam showed her sincere gratitude to the Central Government for the caring and support, as she said she will lead the SAR government to put their best foot forward and work even harder, in order to overcome obstacles.
