Vaccines prevented 60,000 deaths, says Jonathan Van Tam

Vaccines have prevented 60,000 deaths, Deputy Chief Medical Officer Jonathan Van Tam has said.

Prof Van Tam revealed on Thursday Public Health England analysis that showed vaccines had prevented 22million cases of Covid infection and 60,000 deaths.

Speaking to the BBC he said it was “truly massive”.

Asked if he was referring to the UK or England, he said he did not have that information but believes it is for England.

Prof Van Tam also said he did not know if there would be a fourth wave but to expect a “bumpy” autumn and winter.
