US consulate slams Chinese controlled media over disinformation regarding consulate staff

The United States today refuted claims that its two diplomats in Hong Kong had invoked immunity to avoid isolation after positive Covid tests, slamming Chinese controlled media over the“disinformation.”

The US consulate in Hong Kong was temporarily closed yesterday for disinfection after two of their employees had contracted the coronavirus.

Two state media outlets - Ta Kung Pao and Wen Hui Bao - previously reported that the two employees had invoked diplomatic immunity to refuse isolation for Covid treatment

The Consulate today responded on its social media, saying the disinformation campaign from Chinese controlled media about the two positive cases among US Consulate personnel, and their response, is false.

“We reject these efforts to spread disinformation about a critical public health issue,” it wrote.

The consulate also quoted the SAR government’s press release, which said "The US Consulate General in Hong Kong has been fully co-operative with the Government on all the above action items to combat COVID-19."
