Travelers to HK must now have two Covid shots to receive temporary vaccine pass

Starting today (Sat), all travelers aged 12 or above entering Hong Kong must have received at least two Covid-19 shots before being granted the provisional vaccine pass.

The latest standardization came after society opened fire at the government over the controversy where a mainland woman posted on social media that she got the temporary pass without getting one single jab.

Back then, Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu explained that the mainland’s Covid risk is the lowest across the globe, and the measure has been running without reporting any imported cases from the mainland.

According to an official statement Friday night, those who have contracted Covid and recovered must also get one jab to be deemed as fulfilling the vaccination requirement.

People unfit for getting the jabs with a doctor certificate, and those who have received their first shot but have medical proof that they are unfit for their second one, can also apply for the temporary pass.

“Considering that in places outside Hong Kong, vaccination for children aged 11 or below has started later than that for adults, children aged 11 or below will be issued the Provisional Vaccine Pass without having vaccinated at this stage,” the statement added.

People subject to compulsory quarantine and eligible for obtaining the pass will be issued a mandatory quarantine order with the pass for local use at boundary control points upon arrival.

People from mainland or Macau, including those arriving via the Return2hk or Come2hk Scheme, and people not subject to quarantine, can declare their arrival record at the 18 designated post offices and obtain the pass.

“The arrangement is applicable to all inbound travelers, including Hong Kong residents and non-residents as well as travelers from the Mainland, Macau, Taiwan, and overseas places,” a government spokesperson said.

The spokesperson also called on travelers wishing to stay in Hong Kong for longer to receive the Covid-19 vaccine.
