Time for outdated social gathering cap to go

The outdated four-person cap on public gatherings should be canceled, as many occasions have already allowed gatherings of more than four people.

That was the message from infectious disease specialist Wilson Lam Wai-shun from the Hong Kong Medical Association.

Speaking on a radio program on Friday morning, Lam said many activities and occasions have already allowed group gatherings of more than four people.

He noted that if Hong Kong maintains a high Covid-19 jab rate with appropriate anti-epidemic measures, the 4-person public gathering cap would seem outdated and should be canceled by authorities.

Commenting on the new cycle of social distancing measures to begin next Thursday, which could see live performances allowed in restaurants, bars, and nightclubs, and possibly a relaxed social gathering cap from four to 12, the health expert said there is a clear rationale behind the move.

Lam said despite the city still recording thousands of confirmed cases each day, the number of severe cases would not bring down our healthcare system.
