Smuggling speedboats swarm under the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge

Dozens of suspected smuggling speedboats were seen approaching the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, according to a video posted by former foreign police officer Les Bird on Facebook.

This came as police are still searching for missing marine police senior inspector Lam Yuen-yee, who fell into the sea near Sha Chau yesterday morning after her police boat flipped over when chasing a speedboat.

Lam's accident has raised concerns over rampant smuggling amid the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

The three-minute clip posted by Bird was filmed opposite the airport, showing dozens of suspected smuggling boats speeding by the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, with one driver in each and no number on the hull.

The Covid-19 pandemic has been raging for nearly two years, leaving the Shenzhen Bay Control Point and the bridge the only two open land ports in Hong Kong.

Smugglers had to turn to the ocean to smuggle cargo, electronic components and high-end cosmetic products in the waters opposite the airport. Sha Chau and Lung Kwu Tan are also often seen with groups of speedboats.

It is reported that the airport is undergoing construction work so that the giant piles and stone loopholes had formed an "artificial barrier" for smugglers to hide and evade tracking.

Many smuggling speedboat fleets gathered under the bridge pier of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, picking up goods from fishing boats moored near Tuen Mun or Sha Chau.

The smuggled cargo included a wide range of goods, including handbags, cosmetics, electrical appliances, and even frozen meat and seafood, with a total estimated value at HK$10 million.

As the speedboats are highly mobile and can quickly travel to the mainland, they frequently shuttle between the SAR and the mainland for smuggling.
