Sewage sample at Golden Lion Garden tests positive for Covid

A sewage sample collected at a Sha Tin residential block where the Covid-infected freight worker lives tested positive for the virus.

An untraceable local infection was reported on Friday, involving a 48-year-old airport worker who lives at Golden Lion Court, Phase 1 of Golden Lion Garden in Sha Tin.

One of the sewage samples collected there by officers from the Environmental Protection Department on Thursday tested positive for Covid, with a CT value of 35, indicating a lower viral amount. Yet officers have yet to confirm whether the sample carried the L452R mutant strain.

Due to the tropical storm, officers could not collect more samples in these two days. They will visit the block again and collect samples when the weather is better. They will also conduct further examination to see if there is contamination.

The building was on lockdown on Thursday night. However none among the 400 residents there tested positive for the virus.

The man and his wife and daughter have been admitted to hospital. He works at SuperTerminal 1 at the Airport. Around 90 colleagues had been listed as close contacts yesterday and sent to a quarantine facility.

His case ended Hong Kong's zero local infection streak which lasted for 51 days. The city last reported a local case at August 17.
