The Science Fair received more than 400 project submissions from over 1,200 primary four to secondary six students, covering various topics including smart city, medical and healthcare, and sustainability.
In the award ceremony held on Sunday, students from P.L.K. Fung Ching Memorial Primary School received the gold award in the primary division for designing an intelligent water tank that helps people to disinfect their toilets to safeguard their health amid the
Covid-19 pandemic.
Students from Po Leung Kuk Lee Shing Pik College and Heung To Middle School won the gold awards in the junior and senior secondary divisions respectively.
Daryl Ng Win-kong, chairman of the Hong Kong Innovation Foundation, said the inaugural Science Fair “holds special meaning” to the SAR amid the celebrations of the 25th anniversary of the handover.
“Nurturing innovation and technology talents from a young age is vital to the personal and professional growth of our young generations, to help them prepare for the future. This is crucial to Hong Kong’s growth as an international I&T hub,” Ng said.
“Students have come together thanks to their love of science and technology, and the passion and dedication they have demonstrated over the past few months, amid the pandemic, is truly inspiring. I would like to sincerely thank the students for participating, to the parents, teachers, and headmasters for supporting our young innovators, and encouraging them to pursue their dream, empowering them to present their creative ideas and inventions today,” he said.
Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, who delivered a speech through video at the Science Fair, said the SAR government has allocated more than HK$150 billion to develop infrastructure, promote scientific research and nurture talents.
She added that China’s 14th Five-Year Plan has also indicated clear support for Hong Kong’s development into an international innovation and technology hub.
