Rising infections point to rebound

Hong Kong reported 737 new Covid infections yesterday as health authorities expect the daily caseload to climb to four digits soon.

The Centre for Health Protection's principal medical and health officer, Albert Au Ka-wing, said among the fresh cases, 104 were imported, exceeding 100 for the second day in a row.

Au said the daily caseload has been increasing to as much as 800 recently and it's possible that the infection count will hit four digits again.

"[The rebound in infections] is expected as we have loosened some social distancing measures and people are resuming their normal lives," Au said.

"The most important thing is that we have to ensure there is no increase, or we need to monitor the trend of severe diseases, hospitalization and the number of deaths," he said. "So far, we haven't noted a continuous increase in these parameters."

Authorities yesterday received 275 reports of positive test results from 193 schools, including 216 students and 59 teaching staff, Au said.

Four schools saw outbreaks - four students from Tsang Mui Millennium School in Sheung Shui; three students from Deborah Anglo Chinese Kindergarten in Hung Hom; two students and two teachers from Kin Sang Baptist Church Bradbury Pre-school in Tuen Mun; and three students from International College Hong Kong in North district.

All classes with outbreaks will have to suspend face-to-face classes for a week, Au said.

He added that six teachers at Island School in Mid-Levels also tested positive yesterday. They attended a meeting together last week and another nine teachers in the same meeting will have to undergo home isolation.

Au said Po Leung Kuk Lam Man Chan English Primary School in To Kwa Wan, Joyful World Kindergarten in Tsuen King and Pooi To Primary School in Ma Tau Wai all saw two more cases each.

Also testing positive were five disabled patients from Yuet Kwan Home in Aberdeen. Three are roommates while the other two live in different rooms. The 36 other residents of the care home were sent to the isolation facility at AsiaWorld-Expo.

The bar clusters at FLM in Sheung Wan and Racks City in Central reported seven and three more infections, respectively.
