Reopening borders possible if more elderly get jabs

It is possible for Hong Kong to relax stringent disease control measures like reopening borders with Mainland if the inoculation rate of early hits 70 percent, said health expert Ivan Hung Fan-ngai.

Speaking on a radio program, Hung said the goal of building an immunity barrier against Covid-19 could only be achieved if the inoculation rate of the city reaches at least 85 percent.

If the vaccination rate of early reaches 70 percent, the city can relax some the its disease control measures, like reopening borders with Mainland gradually, shortening the length of quarantine for returnees, resuming in-person classes and allowing people not to wear masks during outdoor activities, according to Hung.

He said around seven million doses of vaccine have been administered in the city and there are only 569 incidents that maybe correlated to the vaccine. Of these incidents, 10 percent involved elderly aged above 70 and two percent involved elderly aged above 80.

Data also reported 20 percent of elderly aged above 70 suffer severe side effects after receiving BioNTech vaccine.

Hung pointed out that there is no age limit on receiving the BioNTech vaccine, saying that he has seen a 102-year-old elder getting the jabs.

Au Yeung Kam-chuen, Chairman of the Hospital Authority Coordinating Committee (Obstetrics and Gynaecology), on the other hand warned pregnant women that the risk of miscarriage reaches up to 70 percent if infected with Covid-19.

He stressed that getting the jabs won't increase the risk of miscarriage, and encouraged women who are in the early or middle stage of pregnancy to get the BioNTech vaccine.
