Secretary for Health Lo Chung-mau said in a recent interview that it was not a reasonable expectation to resume quarantine-free travel soon.
Lo said he has set three work goals, including controlling Covid-19, letting citizens have qualified doctors and giving full play to Hong Kong's medical advantages.
He said quarantine-free travel in the short term was not a reasonable expectation but will work towards shortening the number of quarantine days and increasing the travel quota. He would also consider the proposal to set up quarantine premises in Hong Kong for isolating travelers before heading to the mainland.
Lo added that he hoped the public does not regard the "internal" customs clearance with the mainland and "external" customs clearance with overseas countries as opposing relations.
In addition, he said he intended to provide better medical services for the public, not only to have medical treatment but also to be treated by qualified doctors.
He said that the introduction of non-local trained doctors would be helpful in the short term to tackle the serious shortage of medical workers.
Lo also said the government will pay close attention to the development of monkeypox in the world, and that Hong Kong does not need to vaccinate all for the time being. Even if vaccination was needed in the future, it will be focused on high-risk groups, he added
