Police commissioner Raymond Siu Chak-yee said that offering a reward of HK$250,000 for information regarding the shooting in Central is only one of the police’s strategies as he stressed the importance of citizens’ cooperation.
Siu attended the North District Council meeting on Tuesday morning and spoke to the media afterward, saying that police have yet to recover the gun fired in Central’s shooting last Friday, where a man was shot in his abdomen.
He confirmed that the shooting was related to illegal activities that resulted in a quarrel between two triad societies and predicted it had nothing to do with any possible attacks on July 1, Hong Kong’s 25th anniversary of the handover to Beijing.
He added officers’ search for the firearm remains the focus of the investigation.
As for the anti-terrorism hotline launched last Wednesday, Siu noted that over 1,100 reports were received as of Monday night, with some messages needing further follow-up by police.
The police chief also encouraged citizens to continue to report suspicious people or activities.
Although Siu said he can’t confirm if any state leaders are coming to visit on July 1, he pointed out that police have set up different intelligence task forces to ensure a series of celebrations will be staged safely and orderly.
In the first-ever district council meeting Siu has attended, he was challenged by the council’s chairperson Jasper Law Ting-tak on getting caught up in Witman Hung Wai-man’s “Partygate” scandal, who also asked the police chief to explain on law enforcement of anti-Covid curbs.
Siu then told Law that the curbs are here to protect public health, but not the “draconian laws” as dubbed by others. He refuted that he was interested in alcohol, and authorities’ investigation proved he didn’t break any law in the Partygate incident.
Siu also opposed Law’s doubts that police issued the penalty tickets for breaching the mask requirement and group-gathering ban to “make money.”
