Peru exceeds 300,000 cases of coronavirus

Peru surpassed this Sunday, July 5, 300,000 cases of coronavirus, four days after starting a gradual lack of control to reactivate its semi-paralyzed economy, the Ministry of Health reported.

Covid-19 cases rose to 302,718, according to the daily report of the Ministry, after registering 3,638 new infections in the last 24 hours.

Peru, with 33 million inhabitants, is the second country in Latin America with the most cases of Covid-19, behind Brazil, and the fifth in the world.

The deaths continue to exceed one hundred daily, with 177 deaths registered this Sunday, July 5, increasing to 10,589 the total number of deaths since the first death from the coronavirus in the country was reported on March 19.

Among those infected in Peru there are about 2,164 doctors, of whom 73 have died, according to union groups.

The quarantine was lifted Wednesday in 18 of the 25 departments of Peru, including Lima, where the coronavirus is "descending", according to the government, despite accumulating 70% of the country's cases.

In a capital of 10 million inhabitants famous for its chaotic traffic, buses and minibuses returned to circulate this week full of passengers, although all wear masks, as the government ordered.

The streets of Lima looked crowded on the first Sunday in which compulsory social isolation is not in force.

Confinement continues in seven regions, where six million of the 33 million Peruvians live.
