Partial evacuation at Covid-hit North Point building

Top Microbiologist and government adviser on the coronavirus epidemic, Yuen Kwok-yung, said residents living in units 6 and 7 in Block C of Tung Fat Building will have to be evacuated, fearing a possible vertical transmission.

Yuen has been invited to inspect the block this noon as health officials reported a total of eight new cases within the block, along with five others being tested preliminary positive.

Yuen said although the pipelines are intact as the building had undergone renovation seven years ago, the building’s design is not ideal, posing a health risk to residents.

“Most of the cases were found in units 5, 6, 7, and 8, with a possible vertical transmission at the units 6 and 7, which they share the same lightwell. The lightwell is very narrow, if residents turn on their exhaust fans, the hot air will be brought up the lightwell,” said Yuen.

He also added that the old buildings in North Point are similar to those in Yau Ma Tei, where residents share the same lightwell.
