No need of a Covid-only hospital as HK sees 1,794 new cases

Hong Kong saw 1,794 new Covid-19 cases on Saturday as health authorities ruled out the possibility of transforming a hospital that receive patients infected with the coronavirus only at this point.

Among the new cases, 1,680 were locally transmitted including 620 confirmed through PCR tests and 1060 verified RAT results. The caseload of the fifth wave now stands at 1,223,329, according to Chuang Shuk-kwan, head of the Centre for Health Protection's communicable disease branch.

Chuang also added 114 imported infections -- 60 detected at the airport, 48 at quarantine hotels and six were patients who completed seven-isolation and entered communities.

Hospital Authority's chief manager for patient safety and risk management Sara Ho Yuen-ha didn't report any Covid-related death, meaning the death tally

Ho also stressed that the authority is able to handle the current amount of Covid patients at this point and there is no need to transform one of the hospitals into a designated Covid-19 hospital.

Her remarks came after another chief manager Lau Ka-hin of the authority suggested turning a hospital -- occupied by 50 percent of Covid patients -- into a designated Covid-19 hospital on a radio program Saturday morning.

Regarding the disbandment of the Hospital Authority Employees Alliance, Ho said the human resources department will keep an open mind and listen to employees' opinions and demands.

On the other hand, Chuang said the outbreak cluster at Victoria Habour Restaurant in Tuen Mun added three more customers. So far, the restaurant reported 40 infections, two of which are staffers of Fu Tai Elderly Home.

The duo visited the restaurant on June 16 and Chuang believed it is possible that the outbreak cluster of the elderly home can be linked to that of the restaurant. She added authorities are still inspecting the venting conditions of the restaurant.

Fu Tai Elderly Home saw a total of 12 infections, including seven residents and five staffers. Another elderly home and three more care centers for the disabled each added one positive case.

Public hospitals and treatment facilities are now housing 558 patients. Telve of them are in critical condition, 12 others in serious condition and three in intensive care. A total of 80 patients have recovered form Covid in the past 24 hours.
