New URBTIX ticketing system comes in Q4 2022

URBTIX will implement a new ticketing system in the fourth quarter of this year to enhance the website’s capability to handle ticket sales of popular shows more effectively and to combat automatic purchases made by bots.

The new system was developed by Tianjin Maoyan Weying Technology Co Ltd and commissioned by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department in October 2020 through open tender procurement.

In the written reply to lawmaker Kenneth Fok Kai-fong dated Wednesday, Acting Secretary for Home Affairs Jack Chan Jick-chi said Maoyan has completed system analysis and design of the new system and is now undertaking system development and testing of functions.

The implementation of the new system is postponed to the fourth quarter of this year due to factors including mainland developers unable to come to Hong Kong for testing amid the Covid pandemic and delayed transportation of system hardware because of a global shortage of raw materials.

“The new URBTIX system will be equipped with advanced functions such as customer relationship management, business intelligence, and ticket sales data analysis to meet event organizers’ marketing and promotional needs,” Chan’s reply read.

He added the department will, in compliance with Cap 486 Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance, provide information to event organizers regarding the market situation and feedback and service requirements by the public.

Besides the current payment options of Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and China UnionPay cards, the new system will also accept Octopus, Faster Payment System (FPS), Alipay, WeChat Pay, Apple Pay, and Google Pay.
