Infected infant dies as HK sees 4,254 Covid cases

A 22-month-old infant girl passed away on Monday after being infected with Covid-19 as the city reported 4,254 new Covid-19 cases.

Among the new cases, 4,019 were locally transmitted while the other 235 were imported cases, including 132 detected at the airport.

The Hospital Authority said there are six Covid-related deaths on Sunday, involving four men and two women aged 52 to 84, pushing the death tally of the fifth wave to 9,296. Only one of the deceased has received three doses of vaccines.

The infected 22-month-old infant girl, whose condition deteriorated this morning, died at noon at Pamela Youde Nethersole East Hospital. She has been fighting for her life for the past six days due to a brain inflammation triggered by the virus.

HA expressed sorrow and sent its deepest condolences to the infant's family.

Another 35-month-old baby boy was confirmed infected on Monday and suffered from a fever and six times of cramps. He is now treated in the intensive care unit under stable conditions.

Hospital Authority’s Chief Manager of Quality and Standards, Lau Ka-hin said that accompanying labor, regardless of whether they have recovered from Covid-19 or not, must provide proof of negative nucleic acid test results within 48 hours from now on.

He said that if a pregnant woman reached 37 weeks of pregnancy, those who are prepared to accompany the birth must get regular nucleic acid testing.

If the baby is born earlier than expected, the accompanying person can first provide a negative rapid test result within 24 hours, and return a nucleic acid test result within two days.

Caregivers who stay with their patients in the hospital are required to undergo nucleic acid testing twice a week.

The center was informed of 940 positive cases from 558 schools, including 784 students and 156 teachers and staffers. One elderly home also reported new infections.

Nine schools have classes suspended for a week after students got Covid. A dormitory at St Stephen's College Preparatory School has eight cases involving seven rooms, and the entire primary six has to be suspended. Students living in the dorm shared facilities and were suspected to be infected in this way.

Public hospitals and treatment facilities are now housing 1,525 Covid patients. Among them, 23 are in critical condition, 24 are in serious condition, and 11 are in hospital intensive care units. In the past 24 hours, 130 patients have recovered from Covid, and 108 have been discharged.
