About 60,000 tourists visited Hong Kong in August, with over 80 percent coming from the mainland, following the government’s “3+4” relaxed quarantine measure, the latest data by the Tourism Board revealed Thursday.

The city welcomed a total of 48,295 travelers from the mainland and 11,315 travelers from overseas last month, with about 1,500 visitors arriving daily on average.

The relaxed measure of three-day hotel quarantine plus four-day home isolation has been running since August 12, following Hong Kong’s borders reopening to non-residents in May.

August’s number saw a 451 percent year-on-year increase, according to HKTB.

HKTB also said over 183,600 travelers came to Hong Kong in the first eight months of this year, marking a 245 percent year-on-year increase. Among them, over 150,000 were from the mainland.

Although Hong Kong recorded a daily 2,100 visits in the second half of August after the quarantine measure for people arriving from Taiwan and overseas was relaxed, the number only logged a one percent recovery compared with pre-Covid levels, HKTB noted.

Travelers are here in Hong Kong primarily for transit, visiting family, business trips, and necessary outings.
