Hong Kong brands explore mainland shopping platforms

Hong Kong brands have turned to mainland's online shopping platforms following a plunge in tourists to the city amid the pandemic.

Famous local brands have joined the "Greater Bay Area Shopping Festival" which will run until September 22, which feature a total of 298,000 brands and more than 13 million products on online shopping platforms such as Taobao.

Among them is Hong Kong pharmaceutical brand Wai Yuen Tong, whose sales from around 50 shops in the SAR dropped 30 to 40 percent after Covid-19 forced border closures.

“Mainland customers cannot come to Hong Kong shops after the border closure. They can only hire middlemen to buy the products on their behalf, and still have to worry if those products are fakes,” executive director of Wai Yuen Tong Medicine Holdings Vivian Tang Wai-man said.

The brand has now opened a store on Tmall, where mainland customers can order the products. They can even enjoy free shipping for bulk purchases.

As of now, two third of the company's customers come from Greater Bay area, including Hong Kong and Macao.

The number of customers from Shanghai, Beijing and Nanjing cities is also growing, she said.
