HKU warns of potential Covid outbreak in Kennedy Town area; lockdown at Sai Wan Estate

The Medical Faculty of The University of Hong Kong has warned citizens of a potentially large Covid-19 cluster developing in and around Kennedy Town, advising its students and staff to refrain from visiting the area.

The message from the medical school was published on its Facebook page on Thursday morning as an “Urgent and Important” notice.

“It has come to our attention that there is potentially a large Covid-19 cluster developing in and around Kennedy Town. We would strongly advise all students and staff to refrain from visiting the area for lunch or engage in any mask-off activities for the rest of this week,” the notice read.

The notice also reminded its students and staff to upload their daily Covid RAT results to their school system before entering the medical campus.

Hong Kong reported 280 new Covid cases and three deaths on Wednesday, while the infection cluster involving Peony Golden Court in Yuen Long saw three more diners infected, including two men and a woman, aged 71 to 76.

The cluster has so far recorded 23 cases, including 20 patrons, one staff, and two close contacts.

Lockdown was declared at Sai Wan Estate of Central and Western District by the government on Thursday afternoon.

The government will set up temporary specimen collection stations at the "restricted area" and request persons subject to compulsory testing to undergo testing before 10pm on Thursday.

Any persons who had been present at the above building for more than two hours from May 6 to May 12 must undergo compulsory testing on or before this Saturday.
