Hong Kong authorities tonight announced to suspend Macau from its return2hk scheme -- allowing Hongkongers to come home without a quarantine – from tomorrow. Instead, arrivals from Macau must go through 14 days of home quarantine.
The arrangement came after Macau today reported that a family of four tested positive for the Delta variant of
Covid-19.
Thousands of citizens rushed to borders in hope of leaving the city.
However authorities said all people leaving its borders must present a negative
Covid-19 test result taken within 24 hours and urged citizens to refrain from crossing borders unless strictly necessary.
Others flocked to supermarkets to buy up all the food and other supplies, clearing some of the shelves.
Rice, instant noodles, canned goods and toilet paper were snapped up as many were seen to have packed these items into their trolleys.
However, authorities reassured its 650,000 population that the government has ample stocks of fresh, frozen and canned goods, as well as over 1.3 million kilograms of rice in stock, which would be sufficient for a month's consumption.
Macau health authorities suspected that the daughter may be the source of their infection, given the flight she was on when traveling to Nanjing to Zhuhai had confirmed cases on board.
