HK sees 1,650 Covid cases, suspected BA.2.12.1 cluster breaks out in Tuen Mun

Hong Kong reported 1,650 new Covid-19 cases on Thursday, as a seafood restaurant in Tuen Mun saw a suspected BA.2.12.1 outbreak involving 25 patients.

Among the new cases, 1,522 were locally transmitted, including 559 confirmed via PCR tests and 963 verified positive RAT results. The other 128 infections were imported cases.

The Centre for Health Protection's Chuang Shuk-kwan said the tally of the fifth wave now stands at 1,219,675.

Chuang spoke of 38 suspected BA.2.12.1 cases, of which 25 were related to Victoria Harbour Restaurant in Tuen Mun, involving 24 guests and one family member. All of the diners visited the restaurant on June 16. Two suspected cases living at Hing Tai House of Tai Hing Estate in Tuen Mun were also customers of Victoria Harbour Restaurant. The cluster so far saw 26 customers and one close contact tested positive.

All diners at the restaurant on June 16 were subject to compulsory testing and the restaurant would have to submit information on the vaccination pass. Chuang said details including the ventilation of the restaurant were to be investigated and that experts were sent to the restaurant.

Chuang noted that a total of 172 cases were reported by 155 schools, including 135 students and 37 teachers. Class 6C of St. Joseph's Anglo-Chinese Primary School was recommended to suspend after three students tested positive.

St. Francis Xavier's College basketball team added one member and another close contact tested positive. The cluster has so far recorded 12 patients, including 11 members and one close contact.

Chuang added that the three positive cases involving Sunrise Diagnostic Centre were reviewed today, of which two results were still positive and one turned indeterminate.

Hospital Authority's chief manager for patient safety and risk management, Sara Ho Yuen-ha, reported one death today, pushing the city's death tally to 9,185.

The deceased was an 80-year-old man with high blood pressure and coronary heart disease, who had received two doses of the Covid-19 vaccine.

Public hospitals and treatment facilities are now housing 513 patients. Among them, 10 are in critical condition, 10 in serious condition and three in intensive care.
