HK likely to reach 50pc vaccination target in August, says health chief

Hong Kong’s health chief said it is likely that half of Hong Kong’s population will get vaccinated by August or September, but stressed the number is not enough to achieve herd immunity.

Speaking at a LegCo meeting today, Secretary of Health Sophia Chan Siu-chee said as of Wednesday, Hong Kong has seen a vaccination rate of 36.4 percent.

“The number could reach 50 percent by August or September, but we need the vaccination rate to reach at least 70 percent to achieve herd immunity,” she said.

The health chief also pointed out since recording two untraceable local infections last month, authorities have administered over 80,000 Covid tests in the city, without detecting any other related infections.

She also urged members of the public to get vaccinated as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, she said talks with the mainland and Macau authorities over resuming cross-border travels are still undergoing, with details to be announced once available.
