Government has tried its best in securing employment, CE says

Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor said the government had attempted its best in securing employment amid the pandemic

Speaking on her Facebook page today, Lam said the government had rolled out several rounds of anti-epidemic funds and HK$300 billion measures under the budget to help different sectors weather the storm.

She said the government had strived to improve labor rights, including increasing the number of statutory maternal and parental leaves.

"A bill on gradually increasing the number of statutory holidays was tabled to the legco last month as well so that it ties the number of bank holidays,”she said.

Lam also said the government had ramped up the amount of compensation for workers with occupational illnesses and those required to work amid extreme conditions.

“It is hoped that the bill on the cancellation of the MPF offsetting mechanism can be submitted in the following Legco term, “ she said.

The current MPF offsetting mechanism allows employers to take money from employees’ pension funds to offset severance and long-service payments if workers are sacked or the company closes down.

“It is also hoped that the SAR government can complete the amendment of the article targeting the maximum penalty for the breach of the occupational safety and health ordinance.”

The chief executive also called on citizens to receive Covid-19 jabs.
