Doctor arrested for issuing over 3,000 false vaccination exemption certificates

A 65-year-old doctor was arrested on Tuesday for suspectedly selling thousands of fraudulent certificates for Covid-19 vaccination medical exemption to citizens.

Fu Yuen-lung is the seventh doctor arrested for illegally issuing vaccine exemption certificates. The government said that all the exemption certificates issued by these doctors would be invalidated from October 12 onwards.

Police raided Fu’s private clinic at Lai Chi Kok Road at 9 am after receiving complaints. During the inspection, officers seized Fu’s personal computer, multiple electronic patient records, and HK$56,000 cash.

Fu was arrested on the charge of making false instruments. According to the preliminary investigation, he sold 3,196 vaccine exemption certificates to patients between February and May this year and charged for each one a price of between HK$3,000 and HK$5,000.

The government announced on the same day that all the vaccine exemption certificates issued by the arrested doctors would no longer be valid from October 12.

Over 20,000 certificates still within the validity period were issued by the doctors involved, accounting for more than half of all the medical exemption certificates that are still valid.

Separately, health officials confirmed 3,667 new Covid patients, including 193 imported cases and six deaths on Tuesday.
