Government expert advisor David Hui Shu-cheong expected the Covid-19 infection figures would peak this month and appealed to citizens not to attend large-scale family gatherings during Mid-Autumn Festival.
Hui said this reminder came because several doctors, who had already received three doses of a vaccine, were infected with the coronavirus recently after attending gatherings.
He expected the government's request for citizens to present a negative RAT result before going to a gathering of eight people or more can help ease the pandemic development.
Speaking on radio Saturday morning, Hui believed many have yet to report their infections to health authorities, and the official figures may not be exact. Therefore, he called on health authorities to focus on the ratio of severe illnesses among cases to make sure the public healthcare system won't collapse.
He added that if the pandemic declines next month and the healthcare system is not overwhelmed by that time, the city will have the conditions to stage large-scale events, including the international investment summit and the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens in November.
He also noted that the government can scrap the hotel quarantine and switch to the seven-day home isolation arrangement if the number of cases involving severe illnesses remains low.
