Crowds of people queued to enter the K11 Musea shopping mall in Tsim Sha Tsui as the arcade, hit by a recent Covid outbreak, re-opened on Saturday after six days of closure for disinfection work and virus test for its staff.
Several hundreds of people were already waiting outside the shopping center before it opened today.
Shortly after staffers opened the gates, customers rushed into the mall. Workers at the gate checked patrons’ body temperatures and distributed hand sanitizers.
K11 Musea said a total of 2,000 employees of the mall were tested twice, and all of them yielded negative results.
The shopping mall also distributed shopping coupons worth over HK$1,000 to its members in a bid to attract customer flow.
A “super-spreading” cluster has emerged in Mr Ming’s Chinese restaurant, a Chinese eatery in K11 Musea, which had led to the infections of 50 people, including its staffers, customers and close contacts of the patients.
Two other workers of high-end jewelry shop Cartier inside the mall were also infected, sparking fear of a hidden transmission link within the shopping arcade.
After inspecting the mall, leading microbiologist Yuen Kwok-yung said eight samples collected at Mr Ming’s showed positive results with the virus, meaning there were serious environmental contaminations.
Yuen told the press today that one of the positive samples was collected in the restaurant’s pantry, citing possibilities of cross-infections, but he assured the ventilation system in the rest of the mall was safe.
Last week, K11 Group terminated its tenancy agreement with the restaurant after Yuen said the amount of fresh air supply inside the eatery is below its license requirement.
