Hong Kong reported 4,265 new Covid-19 cases on Saturday as authorities stressed the criteria for citizens leaving the isolation camp remain the same over recent controversy sparked by reports.
According to the Centre for Health Protection's Chuang Shuk-kwan, 4,034 cases were locally transmitted, including 1,387 confirmed PCR tests and 2,647 verified positive RAT results.
The remaining 231 infections were imported from overseas -- 104 detected at the airport, 98 in quarantine hotels and 29 found in local communities after the patients completed the seven-day isolation.
Hospital Authority's chief manager for integrated clinical services Larry Lee Lap-yip reported seven related deaths, pushing the death tally of the fifth wave to 9,248.
Recently, media reports exposed that a newly-wed couple was denied permission to leave the Penny's Bay quarantine center and almost missed their wedding even after their RAT results returned negative for two days in a row.
On that, Lee said that the criteria for citizens leaving the isolation camp have always been the same and noted that the daily operations are handled by the Civil Aid Service. Other clinical reasons may be involved, like the test results returned indeterminate, Lee continued.
Among the newly added deaths, one was a doubly-jabbed 94-year-old elderly who passed away at home. The elderly lived with his family in Sai Kung and suffered from dementia and asthma.
One of his family members tested positive for Covid on July 6 with his RAT result being positive the next day. He fainted at home and eventually passed away on July 8. Forensics ruled that his death may be related to the coronavirus.
Another death involved a 91-year-old woman who was transferred to the Hong Kong Buddhist Hospital on July 8 and tested positive on July 16. The authority believed she contracted the virus in the hospital and was transferred back to Queen Elizabeth Hospital on Thursday.
A brain scan found that she suffered from acute brain hemorrhage and medics believed the condition led to her death which was not related to Covid.
Excel Health Care Co. Ltd. in Sham Shui Po saw a resident infected, while Yan Oi Elder Centre reported two residents caught Covid.
Public hospitals and treatment facilities are now housing 1,275 Covid patients. Among them, 26 are in critical condition, 22 in serious condition and two in hospitals' intensive care units. In the past 24 hours, 143 patients have recovered from Covid and 130 of them have been discharged.
