Courthouses to close as Covid hits judges, barristers and defendants

Courthouses in the city will be closed until April 11 starting coming Monday (March 7), with all hearings suspended, according to an exclusive report by Sing Tao Daily, The Standard's sister publication.

During the closure, courts will only hear urgent cases such as bail hearings, which will be heard by a Duty Judge.

The Judiciary is set to make an official announcement later today.

As Hong Kong's fifth Covid-19 wave continues to worsen, it was understood that a number of judges and barristers have contracted the coronavirus during trials.

The city’s prisons also reported up to 1,000 inmates infected with Covid.
