City logs 9,708 Covid cases as BA.4/5 becoming the dominant strain

The government confirmed 9,708 new Covid-19 cases on Sunday, the highest daily tally in five months, including 213 imported cases and ten deaths.

“It is predictable for the daily cases to reach 10,000 since the BA.4/5 variants of the virus spread fast,” said Chuang Shuk-kwan, Head of the Communicable Disease Branch of the Center for Health Protection of the Department of Health.

She added that the cases of patients infected with the variants account for nearly 50 percent of all Covid patients.

Among the ten deaths aged 62 to 99, only four received three doses of vaccines.

Besides, 133 staff of the Health Authority reported being confirmed positive, including a nursery staff in Sha Tin Cheshire Home. Three patients were tested infected and transferred to Sha Tin Hospital, with their wards suspending hospitalizing patients.

Health services for non-emergency will be affected more, Lee Lap-yip, Chief Manager (Integrated Clinical Services) of the Hospital Authority, noted.

“Health services in some general clinics will be reduced or adjusted from tomorrow to cope with the pressure brought by the increasing daily cases,” he said.

Public hospitals now accommodate 2,453 Covid-19 patients, including 339 newly admitted, 43 in critical conditions, and 41 with severe symptoms.
