Brazil on Friday exceeded 70,000 deaths from the new coronavirus, which appears to be stabilizing although with a high level of daily deaths.
According to the Ministry of Health, there were 45,048 new cases and 1,214 deaths in the last 24 hours, bringing the number of infected to 1,800,827 and the number of deaths to 70,398.
Brazil, a country of continental dimensions with 212 million inhabitants, is the second in number of infected and deceased, behind the United States.
The death toll doubled in 35 days (it had reached 35,000 on June 5), with high balances in Sao Paulo (17,442 dead) and Rio de Janeiro (11,280).
In relative terms, there are 335 deaths per million inhabitants, a lower number than the United States (403.4) or Spain (607.5).
But in some states, such as Rio de Janeiro (653 deaths per million inhabitants), Ceará (northeast, 742 / million) or Amazonas (north, 726 / million), the impact is similar to that of the countries hardest hit by COVID-19.
Of the last five weeks (excluding the current one), four registered more than 7,000 deaths, that is, more than a thousand per day on average.
Since its first death in March, Brazil has failed to provide a unified response to the disease, due to opposition between the governors in favor of partial quarantine measures and President Jair Bolsonaro, who criticizes them for their economic impacts.
Bolsonaro himself, 65, announced on Tuesday that he had been diagnosed with covid-19, although he maintained his defiant attitude towards a virus that he came to call "influenza".
In recent weeks, the far-right president has participated in various public events without wearing a mask.
