Testing company BGI is allowed to resume operating mobile specimen collection stations for Covid-19 tests starting this month following a review.
In April, 28 Covid-19 samples tested positive in the BGI laboratory. It had caused fear that there was a Covid-19 rebound outbreak in the city, only to be dismissed later when it was found that there was cross-contamination in the samples.
The government invited the Hong Kong Quality Assurance Agency to conduct a third-party audit on the private laboratory in late-April, with a view of improving the lab's quality assurance management.
It reviewed relevant documents of the lab, including standard operating procedures, and conducted on-site observation and staff interviews.
BGI has responded positively to the study and taken follow-up actions.
“In view of the positive responses of the private laboratory concerned and the follow-up and improvement actions carried out, the government will allow the laboratory, as one of the nine community testing centre operators, to resume operating mobile specimen collection stations with effect from September this year when necessary,” a government spokesman said.
