A total of 170 guests at the birthday party of a top Chinese official, including lawmaker Junius Ho Kwan-yiu who headed to Shenzhen earlier, have all been sent to the quarantine center.
The mass transfer was announced by Chuang Shuk-kwan from the Center for Health Protection in a media session on Friday afternoon.
The party celebrating the birthday of Witman Hung Wai-man, principal liaison officer for Hong Kong at the Shenzhen Qianhai Authority, started at around 6pm Monday (Jan 3) at Reserva Ibérica Tapas Bar & Restaurant in Causeway Center in Wan Chai.
The restaurant has been named in the compulsory testing notice issued today.
Chuang said the party was joined by at least two infected people that night.
A 37-year-old woman who tested positive for Covid-19 stayed at the party between 9.30pm to 10.15pm. Therefore about 70 people who arrived at the party around 9.30pm will need to undergo quarantine.
Meanwhile, another 53-year-old woman, believed to be RTHK program host Joyce Yeung, also tested preliminary positive.
As she stayed at the party between 6pm and 8pm and only left at around 9.30pm, the center decided to send all guests to the quarantine center.
Chuang added that the 37-year-old woman and 53-year-old do not know each other, and there may be two virus sources at the party.
