A 20-year-old woman lost HK$130,000 after being recruited as an “order handler,” which claimed that she could get paid by simply clicking on online shopping platforms.
Police said they received a report from the woman surnamed Sze on Tuesday. She said she had received a job description from a stranger earlier, who said she could earn commissions by clicking on the page of online merchants to boost its popularity.
The victim was then instructed to deposit a total of some HK$130,000 into three bank accounts for “shopping on the platform.”
After receiving the money, the recruiter suddenly disappeared, and the woman called the police.
After preliminary investigations, the case was classified as “obtaining property by deception” and was referred to Wong Tai Sin police for follow-up. No one was arrested yet.
The police reminded citizens that online employment fraud usually claims “offer high salary, same-day pay or work from home arrangement.” They often required low academic qualifications or age requirements, as well as no work experience and CV. At the same time, they avoid mentioning the name or address of the company and provide only the contact information of instant messenger or mobile phone number.
Some fraudsters will even pay commissions to gain the trust of victims after their initial deposits.
The police urged the public to call the Anti-Scam Helpline 18222 if in doubt.
