A young girl who is among a dozen Massachusetts residents to be diagnosed with a mosquito-borne virus, eastern equine encephalitis, has been released from the hospital.
The 5-year-old girl from Sudbury was discharged from Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Friday.
She was recovering there after being released from Boston Children’s Hospital. She was diagnosed Sept. 6.
State public health officials say three residents have died from the virus.
Her family says the girl will continue outpatient care to keep improving her mobility and cognitive functions, such as long-term memory.
Authorities advise residents to wear insect repellent, cover exposed skin and avoid outdoor activities at peak mosquito activity times from dusk until dawn.
