US deeply disappointed over RTHK journalist conviction

The United States said on Friday that it was “deeply disappointed” in the conviction of Hong Kong journalist Bao Choy Yuk-ling on charges of making false statements when she sought to obtain vehicle licence plate information online for producing a documentary.

State Department spokesperson Ned Price wrote on his social media that Choy was merely doing her job as a journalist.

“She is a champion of press freedom, whose important contributions were just recognized by the Kam Yiu-yu Press Freedom Award,” Price wrote.

The spokesperson also pointed out that press freedom is guaranteed by the Sino-British Joint Declaration, which laid the groundwork for Hong Kong's handover to China in 1997.
