The Environmental Agency has 24 warnings of flooding in place, for which "immediate action" is required in and around Greater Manchester and parts of the Midlands
Urgent flood warnings have been issued amid fears of flooding in the north - with locals warned to take "immediate action".
The Environment Agency has identified 36 places where flooding is expected, with nearly one month's rainfall to lash the country.
Weather warnings remain in place for severe rainfall, expected to move from south to north across swathes of the UK.
Forecasters say the downpours will be thundery at times and led to flooding.
In each of the places where a warning is in place, "immediate action" is required, the Met Office says.
In some places, including Greater Manchester, rain is not expected to stop until 9am - with more thunderstorms to come on Tuesday and Wednesday.
