UK MPs Call for Rethink of Proposed Rent Reforms

Levelling Up, Housing and Communities Select Committee raises concerns about potential loopholes, negative impact on students, energy efficiency exemptions, and lack of enforcement.

A cross-party committee of MPs has called for the UK government to rethink its proposed reforms to the rental market after receiving over 200 responses and holding sessions with landlords and tenants. The main concerns listed by the Levelling Up, Housing and Communities Select Committee include potential loopholes in the ban on evictions, the impact on students, energy efficiency issues, and a lack of enforcement capabilities. The MPs called for modifications to the proposed reforms, including making non-payment of penalties a criminal offense, the creation of a specialist housing court, and stronger protection for tenants.
