Tributes poured in for hiker who died in Lantau

Tributes poured in for Englishman Julian Bowerman, who was remembered as the hiking enthusiast who slept alone on his hammock in the wild.

Bowerman, 51, went missing after he went on a solo hike on Saturday to Yellow Dragon River on Lantau Island. Officers located his body on Wednesday afternoon at a valley near the river.

He was a product designer who designed all kind of speakers, his friend Amor Fati remembered.

He visited Hong Kong for work on and off starting 1990, but lived in the city since 10 years ago.

Bowerman's wife lives in Taiwan, but the pandemic made it difficult for her to come to Hong Kong for visits.

“He used to hike every weekend, and mostly in Lantau,” Fati remembered.

He always hiked alone, sometimes he slept alone with his hammock in the countryside if he hiked till night.

Fati said she and her friends hiked with him on Sundays, but he would go hiking alone every Saturday.

Bowerman's family who live in the UK said that they failed to contact him since last Saturday when he told them he would go hiking alone at Yellow Dragon River on Lantau Island. His wife reported to the police on Wednesday.

Officers located his body on Wednesday evening at a valley near the river. He was rushed to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital but he was soon certified dead. He was believed to have died a few days ago.
