The Open University of Hong Kong to be renamed in September

The government today gazetted a bill renaming The Open University of Hong Kong in Ho Man Tin to the Hong Kong Metropolitan University, pending approval from the city’s legislature.

The bill - The Open University of Hong Kong (Amendment) Bill 2021, seeks to change both the Chinese and English titles of The Open University of Hong Kong respectively.

The bill will be introduced into the Legislative Council on June 23, with the new title of the OUHK to take effect on September 1 after its approval.

President of the university Wong Yuk-shan earlier said the new name “Metropolitan University” is reminiscent of the charms of metropolitan areas in Hong Kong.

“The university will aim to develop into a comprehensive university, offers an array of programs instead of only providing arts, science and business programs,” said Wong.
