Local tennis sensation Coleman Wong Chak-lam says he will represent Hong Kong at the Davis Cup in Taiwan in September and also has his eyes set on the Paris Olympics in 2024.
The 18-year-old revealed his plans at a press conference yesterday after returning home following a year of overseas competitions.
Wong made history in September when he lifted the US Open boys' doubles title along with French partner Max Westphal in New York - a first for Hong Kong - but failed to qualify for the boys' singles of the same event.
In January, Wong also took the Australian Open boys' doubles prize with American partner Bruno Kuzuhara.
Speaking to the Hong Kong Tennis Association, Wong described his US Open victory as a "miracle."
He said: "Based on our rankings, we were not qualified, but we were able to join as someone quit.
"It never occurred to us that we could make it to the end," he added.
This month, Wong made history yet again by becoming the SAR's first player to reach the quarter-final of the boys' singles at Wimbledon.
He said he was impressed by his supporters as he could hear them cheer in Cantonese.
"It was a special experience, as I had been away for so long and I hardly heard Cantonese, and their cheering made me feel at home."
He added that their enthusiasm made him want to win to repay them.
"In the past, I always saw that fencing and swimming athletes winning major titles for Hong Kong, and now I am very proud to become one of those athletes," he said.
Wong plans to represent Hong Kong at the Paris Olympics in 2024.
"This is what I dreamed of since I started playing tennis I just thought of playing tennis for Hong Kong and being the first ever Hongkonger to do it," he said.
"I also want to compete here in Hong Kong someday and I hope my fans can cheer for me at home."
The top athlete was admitted to the University of Hong Kong via its top athletes direct admission scheme in March after rejecting offers from Stanford and Harvard.
He will pursue a degree in business administration online starting September while balancing his tennis career.
