Wet market stall runners want the government to subsidize setting up e-payment systems, after Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po announced that the government will be issuing HK$5,000 electronic consumption vouchers to stimulate the economy.
Most market stalls in Hong Kong do not accept e-payment. Representative from the local wet market association said e-payment system can give them a 30 percent growth in business. He added that the government should help other stores to digitize payment as well.
Lawmaker Vincent Cheng Wing-shun hoped that help can be provided before the government starts issuing e-vouchers. Another member Peter Shiu Ka-fai will also meet relevant departments alongside the stall runners today.
