Spain requests arrest of a Panamanian accused of embezzlement of $5 million

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation of Spain denounced to the Panamanian authorities an accountant of the Technical Office for Cooperation (OTC) of Spain in Panama for being allegedly responsible for an embezzlement of about 4.5 million euros ($5 million).

Last February, the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) began to suspect Omar Guevara , a Panamanian national, as allegedly responsible for the gradual withdrawal of funds.

The money is from Spain's long-term cooperation programs with Panama.

The accountant allegedly committed the crime with falsification of signatures, certificates and bank statements, Europa Press points out on its website.

According to the sources consulted, the Ministry denounced him to the Panamanian authorities in just 24 hours, hired a legal office for the eventual trial and requested the arrest of the suspect.

The Attorney General of Spain, Eduardo Ulloa, issued the arrest warrant on April 3, but since then the whereabouts of the accountant are unknown.

In March, the Foreign Ministry sent a mission of the General Services Inspection to the country. Its mission was to carry out a complete internal audit of the affected funds.
