Six major transport infrastructure layouts released, tunnels to be built through wetland

The transport authority announced the layout plan of three major roads and three strategic railway projects, including the construction of tunnels in Tin Shui Wai to reduce the impact on the wetland reserve due to its proximity.

In his Policy Address delivered in October, Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu raised to drive and support the city’s development by speeding up transport infrastructure construction.

The Transport and Logistics Bureau recently introduced the Strategic Studies on Railways and Major Roads beyond 2030 to the Legislative Council.

Under the project, Northern Metropolis Highway, an east-west connectivity with 18 kilometres in length, will be constructed in the New Territories with part of its sections going through wetland conservations areas.

The Highways will start from Tin Shui Wai, pass through the San Tin/Lok Ma Chau Development Hub, Kwu Tung North, and connect to Lo Wu South.

Since the section of Tin Shui Wai for the Highway will be close to the wetland conservation area, a tunnel will go through the wetland, fish ponds, and mountains, said the government.

The other two roads are Shatin Bypass, a north-south new trunk road connecting Fanling Highway in Tai Po and Kowloon West, and a 2 km TKO-Yau Tong Tunnel which serves as the third road tunnel at TKO.

For the railway projects, the Hong Kong Section of the Hong Kong-Shenzhen Western Rail Link will connect Hung Shui Kiu and Qianhai, with a total length of about 8 km. A new station located at Lau Fau Shan might be built depending on the result of the review.

The 16 km Central Rail Link will connect Kam Tin with Kowloon Tong via Kwai Chung. The government propose the project not go through Shek Lei Pui Reservoir and Kowloon Reservoir.

And the approximately 3-kilometre-long Tseung Kwan O Line Southern Extension will be linking the LOHAS Park Station and the underground station set to be built in TKO Area 137.
