Schools 'responsible' for national security

Chief Secretary John Lee Ka-chiu said schools are responsible for implementing national security education when he attended a secondary school's flag-raising ceremony yesterday.

Lee visited Clementi Secondary School in North Point yesterday to learn more about the implementation of national security education in the school.

Schools should aim to nurture "law-abiding citizens who have a sense of national identity and are able to pass on the magnificent Chinese culture, [enable] students to have pride in being a member of the Chinese nation and make contributions to the country and Hong Kong," Lee said.

Students told Lee about their experience participating in National Day celebration activities and other learning activities on civic education.

Some shared what they learnt from national astronauts and aerospace experts after they attended the "Thematic Talk on Aerospace Science by Distinguished Mainland Aerospace Scientist" held in June and "A Dialogue Between Space and Earth" as part of "The Spirit of the Times Shines upon Hong Kong" activity series last month.

Lee said the events shows the country's support for the SAR and how it attaches great importance to youth development in Hong Kong.

He also encouraged students to join more national education activities to build up positive values and become citizens who are responsible, appreciative of Chinese culture and committed to society.

The school principal Bonnie Fung Lai Miu-yee told Lee how the school implemented the government guidelines for school administration in relation to safeguarding national security.

Lee also talked to teachers to understand their progress in enhancing education on the country's constitution, the Basic Law and national security both inside and outside the classroom.
