Scammer buying $120,000 handbag with fake cheque arrested

A 19-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of obtaining property by deception after buying a handbag worth HK$120,000 with a fake cheque.

A 23-year-old woman selling handbags on online shopping platform met with the suspect surnamed Lee at Olympic MTR station on June 1. She soon realised being scammed as the cheque was deemed void.

Lee asked to meet her again on the same day at Wan Chai MTR station for buying another handbag, and was arrested after the seller called the police.

Lee has been released on bail pending further investigation and is due to report to the police in early July.

Citizens are reminded to be vigilant when shopping online by paying attention to the buyer and seller reviews, when the account was created, and also the transaction records. Sellers should also verify transaction records to check whether the funds have been received.
