Li Chak-lam, a 34-year-old designer, was sentenced to three years and nine months in prison for rioting after pleading guilty at the District Court on Monday.
Li was prosecuted for participating in a riot with others on Lung Cheung Road in Wong Tai Sin on August 5 in 2019, when he charged the police cordon line by throwing helmets and tear gas canisters.
In his ruling, Judge Stanley Chan noted that Li was wearing protective gear including a helmet, mask and gloves during the incident, and had been standing in front of the crowd, having a leading role to a certain extend.
Chan said this shows his participation is premeditated, and should therefore bear responsibility for his actions.
