Passenger segregation: Hong Kong airport terminal splits into two zones to curb cross-infection

The restricted area inside Hong Kong International Airport's Terminal 1 will be split into two zones to segregate passengers on mainland China flights from other international travelers in order to curb cross-infection.

According to a memo issued by the Airport Authority, the new measure will come into effect this coming Monday (Nov 15).

The Authority said the arrivals and departures levels within the restricted area, along with the boarding gates and parking stands, will be affected in the new arrangement.

Apart from separating the passengers, the split would also see airport staff assigned to either side with no mixing allowed during working hours.

The Authority said staff on either of the two designated zones - the Green Zone and the Orange Zone, will not be able to share the same dining and resting facilities. They will also not be allowed to come into contact with passengers and aircrew members from the other zone.

The Green Zone will accommodate mainland China flights, while the Orange Zone will accommodate flights to or from outside of the mainland.

“Business partners and service contractors involved in passenger servicing and flight handling are required to set up dedicated teams for handling the respective flights,” an authority spokesman said.
