Panama promotes the breeding of ornamental fish as an alternative for entrepreneurship

In order to promote the breeding of ornamental fish, aquatic plants and the cultivation of tilapia as an entrepreneurial alternative, the Panama Aquatic Resources Authority (ARAP) visited the province of Los Santos.

According to the entity, ornamental fish aquaculture in developing countries contributes positively in terms of poverty alleviation and marine conservation, due to its low initial investment.

It is an important alternative, mainly as a way to relieve fishing pressure on wild populations ... it could be a good opportunity for people with low economic resources, said Flor Torrijos, administrator of ARAP.

According to Torrijos, Panama is in an initial stage of this activity, however, it seeks to promote it, as part of the economic revival that it seeks to promote.

We consider that it is an industry that has a lot of potential and that requires support in terms of simplifying the permitting and training procedures for the population. Panama has very good conditions due to its pristine waters and rain, so we could contribute and promote this activity, said Torrijos.

Colombia, which is one of the three countries that exports the most ornamental fish, produces about 27 million fish annually.
