Panama exported 270 containers of seedless watermelon to the United States and Europe

Panama exported 270 containers of seedless watermelon to the United States and Europe. 80 containers were sent to Europe and 190 containers were destined for the US market, 50 of which have seedless mini watermelons and 140 have large seedless watermelons, according to the Ministry of Agricultural Development (Mida).

The exports were made by the Estrada Company, SA, which exports seedless watermelon to the United States, the Netherlands, Spain and will carry out tests in England.

The company has 144 hectares dedicated to the production of watermelons. It has 62 hectares in El Caño, in the province of Cocle, and 82 hectares of watermelons and 8 hectares of Harper melons in Gorgona, in the province of Panama Oeste.

According to the Mida, the company uses grafted hybrid seeds to grow vigorous plants that are resistant to insects and diseases during their development. They alternate sowing of diploid hybrids to favor pollination, use drip irrigation and fertigation, and plastic culture to control weeds, minimizing evaporation and repelling insects.

The company's export activity is also a source of employment for rural families who live in the area of influence of these projects. It helps improve their income and increase their standard of living, the Mida highlighted.

Estrada Company SA complies with national and international standards, such as GLOBALG.A.P. and Rain Forrest Alliance to export to Europe and with the FDA's requirements to make shipments to the United States.
